Finnerty Gardens at the University of Victoria
3800 Ring Rd, Victoria,
It is well worth the hour or so that it takes to explore the botanical gem that is Finnerty Gardens.
Admission is free to the 2.6 hectare site which is home to over 4000 trees and shrubs. The garden is open year round. Although there is something to attract viewers in every season, the period from mid-January to late June is especially spectacular when the gardens collections of over 1500 rhododendrons and azaleas come into bloom. It is one of the best collections in Canada.
However brilliant the rhododendrons are in the spring, the gardens are lush year round. If you’re a real plant buff, the majority of plants have name signs. There are lawns for sitting and relaxing (maybe a picnic), lots of benches for sitting and reading, or just enjoying the ambiance and the distinctive views, and the peace and quiet. There may be someone playing the flute.
There are three tranquil ponds for wild birds and water-loving plants. Watch for the Timber Bamboo.
It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to drive from Albion Manor to the Finnerty Gardens at UBC.
